Abstract: This webinar will present recent advances in the field of optical signal synthesis using photonic integrated circuits (PICs), addressing the different photonic techniques available involving from mode locked to dual wavelength laser sources as well as high speed photodetectors. Recent progress will be reported, on monolithic integration of the complete system on a single chip, as well as the development on planar antennas. These techniques are highly promising, enabling high integration densities, low power consumption and seamless interoperability between optical and electronic signals. The webinar will also discuss the implications in the development of related packaging solutions for the discussed photonic integrated circuits, with consideration towards practical applications in the area of wireless links pursued within the on-going European FP7 project iPHOS
